Watch Chinese TV online

January 29th, 2010

If don’t understand Chinese, watching Chinese TV probably is not too fun.  But if you do, this might be a good way to watch what most Chinese people are watching in China.  And get a different perspective on the same event and compare how it is reported from the western media.

You can download the program here:  http://cbox.cntv.cn/

It’s only for Windows platform.  If you are on another platform, you can try a Windows emulator.

Besides the client download, you can also use their browser plug in.  It has plug in for Internet Explorer and Firefox.   The plug in download is on top of http://bugu.cntv.cn/live/index.shtml.

The viewing experience is pretty good.  I get much better result when I use it in New York than in Zheng Zhou, China.  I guess my cable connection is faster in New York than in Zheng Zhou or they have better CDN for oversea users.

After the installation, when you run the program, it displays a window with lot icons.  The 1st icon is for direct TV broadcast.  The rest of the icons all lead to web pages.

Once you click on direct broadcast, a display window came up and a slider on the bottom where you can select different channels.  The 1st channel is the news channel.  I watch this one often.  The news has ads too, but ads are not as frequent as US’s network TV news channels.

Is Google reading your email?

January 25th, 2010

On Jan 12, 2010, Google announced on its blog that it was hacked.  The “primary goal of the attackers was accessing the Gmail accounts of Chinese human rights activists.”

It is not surprising to some Gmail accounts got hacked.  What’s surprising is hacking the Gmail accounts of Chinese human rights activists. How does Google know which Gmail account belongs to the Chinese human rights activists?

I don’t remember there was a question when registering for a new Gmail account, they ask if you are a Chinese human rights activists. But from their blog, they must have a way to determine if you are one.

If we take look Google’s main business which is search engine, before it can do search, it has to read a lot web pages and categorize them.  If we follow this thought, Google should also be able to categorize Gmail users.  One category for Chinese human rights activists. Another category for theorists, and so on.

Besides using Gmail, is it possible just using Google search, it would insert some codes in your computer to check if you are Bin Laden, and send an unmanned aircraft and drop a missile on you?

China internet censorship vs US internet censorship

January 23rd, 2010

In China, some web sites are blocked such as youtube.com, facebook.com and twitter.com.  I used to be able to access facebook.com.  But after a riot incident in Xin Jiang on July 5, 2009 resulted in the death of 156 and injured 1080 people, they got blocked.
The cause was a smaller riot on June 26, 2009 between workers from Xin Jiang and other ethnic regions in Shao Guan City of Guang Dong Province.   This riot resulted in the death of 2 and injured around 120 people.
How it started was a young female worker entered Xin Jiang workers’ dorm by mistake.  She was harassed by Xin Jiang men.  The security came and tried to take away one of the men and was stopped the rest.   When that female worker returned to her dorm and complained, others went to Xin Jiang workers’ dorm to seek justice.   Later a fight broke out.   Over 30 police cars and 20 some anti-riot trucks came.  Some got injured from the fight and two died.

Somehow this event propagated 4500 kilo mile away to Xin Jiang.  If going by train, one would take about two and half days.

The western media started reporting there was a riot in Xin Jiang and then the Chinese media started reporting it too.  Then facebook.com, twitter.com and youtube.com got blocked.  This is not the first time youtube.com got blocked.
How I see it is one small incident started with some male flirting with a girl or consequently insulting her, through the modern communication technology such as phone, email, IM, text messaging and video web site quickly spread and caused a major riot in another part of the country.  It’s like two planes collided with two buildings in NY and resulted three buildings collapse.  Then two countries got bombed later in another part of the world.

Many media reported that China blocks sites, but US does it too.  It’s done in a different way.  For example I like to watch PBS’s video.  In China, when you go to PBS.org, the site is working, but when you try to watch their video, it will say it’s not available for your region.  The same is for Hulu.com.  The site works, but can’t watch their video in China.
If you work in the software industry, you probably know there are US laws against certain software for use outside of US, especially in the area of encryption.  There is a double standard on freedom access of information.
The movie and music industry are certainly against free access of information.  They always appear in the news suing people who download their stuff.
One thing China blocking is porn.  Could it be that the porn industry is funding the US state department to challenge China to open up access?  Once it’s open, then they can sue the Chinese people as well.  Or is it the global war and riot planners want unrestricted access to fan the flame of death as they see it’s their god given freedom.

China internet filtering software : Green Dam Youth Escort

June 25th, 2009

Recently Chinese government issued an order that all new PC must be shipped with an internet porn filtering software called Green Dam Youth Escort by July 1, 2009.

China already got this internet filtering system that can block web sites on the net.  Most of the porn sites are blocked within China.  Surprisingly, Google got blocked for linking to porn sites.  Not sure why each user need to install another software to do the same.

News said that Chinese government licensed this software for one year use by all the Chinese.  So, money was involved.  40,000,000 RMB to be exact.  About  5,851,803 USD equivalent.

My guess is after the first year, license will be renewed and more money will be exchanging hands.

This software works only on MS Windows.  For users running Mac or Linux, they will be left out.  For all I know, most broadband ISP’s in China required you to run a MS Windows dial up client before connecting to the internet.  If you are not running MS Windows, you will have a difficult time connecting to the net.

The requirement of this software is announced in the name of protecting children from porn. (My reasoning is that if there were no sex involved, there will be no children. Imaging a place that there’s no sex and children. It will be like paradise where Adam and Eve running naked and only God will be creating and destroying things.  :)   Protection of children and the innocent is often used in US media for politically correctness.  Maybe children must not know about sex, otherwise sexual appear on ads will fail to work on the future consumers.

Apparently, some US politicians and companies were not happy about this move by the Chinese.  One reason is for privacy and freedom issues.   Another reason is lock out of market competition.

Google blocked

June 25th, 2009

Google.com was blocked in China.  I read the story in Yahoo news.  I asked some of my friends in China and most of them were unable to access Google.com.  Except few friends in Shen Zhen said they were still able to access it.

Few days ago, Google.cn was blocked.  There was a funny story in the Chinese news where one of the people quoted that he was glad that Google got blocked because he used it for porn.  It turns out he works for the news agency.  Somehow he got tracked down by the people on the net.  His cell phone was off.  I guess too many people calling him to find out if he was saying his own words or quoting the official story line.

Not sure why some place got blocked and not others in China.  Maybe it’s a bargaining strategy with the US.

Many years ago Google was blocked in China.  I forgot for what reason.  Then too many people complained for not able to do research, and it got unblocked.

Another related story going on these days in China is that Green Dam-Youth Escort internet filtering software.   Maybe Google got blocked has something to do with it.

While Google is down for the Chinese, other search sites can be used are Yahoo.com and MS’s Bing.com.

PHP OOP vs Procedural

April 28th, 2009

Now days I programming mostly in PHP.  I had great hope for Object –oriented programming.    When I first expose to classes in C++, I was a bit disappointed.   Classes are built with methods which are the same as procedural programming.

If Object-oriented programming were going to solve the problems of procedural programming, it’s not going to be that easy if it’s doing the same procedural ways in its methods.  Maybe the private data are safer from accidental change, but it’s not much.

If one tries to write better programs, one need to better understand the problem at hand, a structural break down of a big problem into smaller problems, and each solve by a small program.  I liked the way how Unix work with all those small programs.  You can send the output from one program to another and reuse those programs.

Right now it’s hard to argue if OO is better or procedural is better yet.  We can say there are bad programs written in Object-oriented way and there are bad programs written in procedural way.  If a program doesn’t do what it supposes to do, then it’s certainly a bad program.

To have a good program we need a good design, a good idea or plan to start from.  What is a good design then?  When to have functions and sub routines?  How to build a class structure?

Once someone learned programming, they can write programs.   Maybe good programming and design is from years of practices, trials and errors.  Maybe some are just born with it.

Some say one way is more readable.  My feeling is if it’s difficult to read and understand, you should rewrite it.

What’s wrong with the USA today?

December 13th, 2008

There are many good things in the USA.  I’ll write them in another article.  Here, I will talk about what I see that’s wrong with the USA.

With the recent Wars and Bail Outs, I see the USA is going down toward a path that’s dishonest and evil.

For the Iraq War, it was claimed that Saddam had WMD’s and the world is in danger.  It turned out, Saddam got captured and killed.  No WMD was ever found.  All the claims and proofs of WMD were lies.  If a mistake was made, admit it and withdraw the troops back.  Not withdrawing from Iraq shows that the USA’s arrogance and shameless in front of a lie that was made to the whole world.  Its true purpose and motive are non-speak able and apparent.

The Iraq War is costing lives and money.  Those money and lives can be used in much more meaningful ways than death and destruction.

Before the USA entered Iraq, I knew WMD is a lie.  It’s pretty simple to see if one wants to fight against WMD, the USA got the most of them.  You don’t need to go to Iraq to find them.  You can find them right here in the USA.  If you reduce USA’s WMD to one tenth or hundredth of its stockpile, it still will be the world’s only remaining super power.

The anthrax scare during 911 came from the USA too.  You would assume some foreigner developed and brought it into the USA and use it in those attacks in the USA, but the source turned out to be from the USA’s Army lab.  After the FBI ruing a string of suspects’ reputations, one of the Army scientists turned up dead by suicide.  Case closed?

Anthrax don’t kill, people do.  Americans kill Americans.

During 911, the two planes hitting WTO buildings were believable.  Steel buildings can collapse, it’s harder to believe.  Two WTO buildings got hit by two planes and three WTO steel buildings collapsed — it’s a bad movie script.  Should the FBI take a closer look why steel can break apart that easily?  Not a chance.  All the steels from the collapsed WTO buildings got sold for scraps right the way and shipped over seas.  Apparently, they were good steels to be reused for some other new buildings.

The War made some people rich, but its blood money.  When people fly planes and hit our buildings, we call them terrorists.  When we fly planes and bomb other people, they call us terrorists. When will the terror stop?

Are the top American commanders really believed they can wipe all the Muslims in the Middle East like what they did to the native Indians in America?

Now, let’s talk about the Bail Outs.

The rich corporate executives financed politicians’ campaigns.  Once politicians came to power, they return the favors by making new laws that allow rich corporate executives to be more rich and powerful.   The cycle continues.  The Arms manufacture wants more Wars and Terrorists.  And politicians granted their profit wishes into deadly reality.

Do you remember 401K when it first came out?  Seemed like too good to be true.  It’s tax free.  The company will match your contribution.  Unless you are really needed the money from your paycheck, you are much better putting the saving in the 401K.  All these 401K contributions from all the workers in USA go to the stock market.  It’s been going higher and higher.  Until…

Now everyone’s 401K got wiped out.   Corporate executives can go to politicians and get their Bail Outs.  The trick is like this.  First, they made 401K possible, so average workers’ money can be funneled into the stock market.  Once they got your money, you can’t really blame them because it said right there in black and white, it had certain risks and no guarantee on returns.

Now with the Bail Out, it’s using government’s tax power to collect more money from everyone.

With 401K, the Devil was trying to trick you and there was a choice.  With the Bail Out, it’s the same Devil, but there’s no choice.  Rich used the politician they financed to place more tax on people.

The American colonist didn’t like to be taxed.  When British placed a stamp tax, they revolted.  Now Americans are eating it bit by bit.  First, we have to make sure the troops got enough money to fight the War.  Not matter how much money we put in, it seems that the US troops are still don’t have what they needed; Veterans are not treated well and living in miserable places in Veterans’ hospitals.

Later, it’s the financial Bail Out.  If we don’t Bail Out them, the whole financial system will collapse.  If steel buildings can collapse, surely our financial system can collapse.  If it collapsed, how much more difficult it will be to milk more money out of folks like you and me.

Now is the USA’s Big (Beg) Three Auto Bail Out.  It’s still in the talks.  It used to be the USA kept the foreign made Japanese cars out by tariffs.  Then Japanese car makers had to setup shops in the USA in order to sell their cars. Now the USA made Japanese cars are selling better.   Why? Maybe it’s because they make a better product.

So much talk of free trade, free market competition.  It’s a lie just like WMD.

When will the USA be a better place?  As long as the system of money financed politicians’ campaigns are in place, it will only get worse.  What people can do is not join the War, don’t buy stock, and don’t buy cars inferior cars.

If you don’t join the War, you are preventing yourself from getting hurt and saving some foreigner’s lives.  The USA’s offensive actions are inviting counter offensive from others.

If you don’t buy stock, you might miss out on the enticed gains that can never be guaranteed, but your money won’t be as easily wiped out by others.

If you have to buy a car, shop around and buy one that’s good for the environment.  Don’t buy a truck that can go in the jungles when your tax dollar already have paved road built.

Say No to Bail Out and War Bill, is just like saying No to Stamp Tax.
